ARTICLE 15: Ulcerative Colitis (UC)

Overview

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is another form of inflammatory bowel disease that specifically affects the colon and rectum. It causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the colon, often resulting in bloody diarrhea and urgency.

Key Recommendations for Patients

  • Symptoms to recognize: frequent loose stools with blood, abdominal cramps, fatigue, and weight loss.
  • Treatment goals: reduce inflammation during flares, maintain remission, and lower long-term risks such as colon cancer.
  • Treatment options:
    • Anti-inflammatory medications, immune-modifying drugs, and biologics are used based on disease severity.

    • Surgery may be required in severe cases when medical therapy fails.

  • Nutrition and lifestyle: during flares, a low-fiber diet may provide relief; during remission, focus on balanced nutrition. Regular colonoscopies are important for monitoring disease and cancer risk.
