ARTICLE 17: Understanding Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE)

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic allergic inflammatory condition of the esophagus. It occurs when eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) build up in the esophageal lining, often triggered by food allergens.

Common Symptoms

Adults may experience:

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Food getting stuck

  • Chest discomfort

  • Persistent heartburn not responding to acid medications

Children may present with:

  • Feeding difficulties

  • Vomiting

  • Poor growth

What Causes EoE?

EoE is commonly associated with food allergies such as:

  • Dairy

  • Wheat

  • Eggs

  • Soy

  • Nuts

  • Seafood

Environmental allergens may also contribute.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis usually requires an upper endoscopy with biopsy. Treatment options include:

  • Elimination diets

  • Swallowed topical steroids

  • Acid suppression therapy

  • Ongoing monitoring to prevent scarring or narrowing

At Gamit Clinic, we provide comprehensive evaluation and long-term management to improve swallowing and quality of life.
